Owned and organised by Vision Nine Group, the Boardmasters was founded in 1981 when the surfing competitions started, and music was added to the festival in 2005. The festival has a capacity of 53,000 people.

The Boardmasters offers different ticket options and packages for those wanting to attend different parts of the festival. After party and boat party packages are available as well as, camping packages, parking and campervan packages, surf lesson packages, single day tickets and VIP tickets.

The organisers of the Boardmasters strive to protect the environment and educate others on the importance of being eco-friendly. They offer coach tickets to and from the festival to help reduce the amount of vehicles going there and using unnecessary petrol. In 2014 they established the Boardmasters Foundation which works with the surrounding community to promote surfing, as well as bringing awareness to local issues such as homelessness and negative environmental issues. They are long term partners with Surfers Against Sewage and the Boardmasters Facebook page regularly posts about their Green Team which hosts a range of activities that help to keep the coast line clean.

The Boardmasters usually takes place around the second week of August every year and prices range from around £59 for an adult single day ticket to £400 for the top VIP Charger experience.
