Henwood, in the pairsh of Linkinorne near Liskeard, grew from a scattered farming settlement into a substantial village as a direct result of the close proximity of the Phoenix Mines and Cheesewring Quarries. In the late eighteenth century, with six hundred employed at Wheal Phoenix and two hundred and forty at the Cheesewring Quarry, the need for accomodation and services became acute. Henwood underwent a dramatic expansion. Rows of workers cottages were built, using granite from the quarry, farm outbuildings were developed into living quarters and a chapel, sunday school and pub were established.
