St Winnow Parish Church

St Winnow is a thinly-populated and scattered parish and village located on the eastern banks of the River Fowey, just south of Lostwithiel. The parish is recorded in the Domesday Book as St Winnuc and the name St Winnow is thought ot derive either from St Winnoc or St Winwaloe.

The village church occupies a superb location overlooking the Fowey estuary. It is though that the church may have been built on the site of a former Celtic monastery. Although most of the present building dates back to the fifteenth century, in the corner of the churchyard is a burial plot for the Vivian family with Celtic headstones.

St Winnow is a charming place nestling close to the river's edge. Some scenes from the BBCs 'Poldark' series were filmed here.
