This photograph was originally published in 1898 entitled 'When the boats come in'. It features St Ives fisherman Edwin Couch with his neice, Bessie Phillips, on his shoulders.

In those days St Ives was the biggest pilchard port in Britain with fish being shipped all over Europe from here. Whilst there were big profits for the wealthy boat owners times were still hard for the men doing this dangerous job.
