This demonic looking little crab is every bit as mean as it looks. It is a velvet swimming crab (Necora puber) and is common around the rocky shores of Cornwall.
The name comes from the velvety covering of its shell and the fact that it is a good swimmer - its back legs are extra broad to act as paddles.
Also known as the 'devil crab' this red-eyed crab is very aggressive. Unlike other native crabs, which will retreat when harassed, the velvet crab goes on the attack.
