John Payne Memorial - St Ives

The memorial to the martyr John Payne, harbour master (portreeve) of St Ives. He was executed by the Provost Marshall during the 1549 Prayerbook Rebellion for his catholic beliefs.

Situated on the wall of St Ia church the memorial is inscribed:

To honour John Payne, portreeve of this town who was hanged in the market place and all the men of Saint Ives who died to defend the Catholic faith in the Western Rising - 1549
