Cury

The small village of Cury just inland from the accessible beach at Poldhu Cove has little of interest beyond its church. This low-roofed building of St Corantin has a typically Norman doorway and some well-preserved stone carvings from the 15th century. The local pub is called the Wheel Inn and serves food all week.

However, it is from the cliffs above Poldhu that the founder of wireless communication, Guglielmo Marconi, sent the first transatlantic radio message at the turn of the 20th century and started a company that would become Cable and Wireless. The ruins of the transmitting station are still visible near a monument and a visitors’ centre devoted to the man, which opened in 2001, the centenary year of the momentous experiment.
