The Baba Indian Restaurant -Truro/Penzance

I recently visited BaBas restaurant on New Year’s Eve for a meal for two with my girlfriend. I arrived at the restaurant for 9pm when my booking had been made for 2 weeks previous. However when I went to confirm my booking BaBas had failed to write it down and therefore I had no table booked for the restaurant. Luckily for us a couple who were already there and had not sat down to eat yet offered us our table but we declined and asked for a table where all four of us could sit. BaBas did have a table for 4 so luckily we managed to sit down. However before we sat down I noticed the manager was very friendly towards customers he knew and even appeared to offer them a table before other paying customers who had been waiting longer.
Anyway we were happy to get a seat and thought the worst part of the evening was over. We were wrong. We sat down at approximately 9.20pm but our main course did not arrive till 11.25pm. I believe we ordered our main course about 9.30pm with no starter and expected it to arrive within the hour. This is poor service and not good enough no matter how busy the restaurant is. Even when we got our food it was barely warm and had no taste to it. Once we had finished the waiter appeared to be hurrying us out of the restaurant even though there were several tables free for any customer who wanted to come in.
This is the worst experience I have ever had eating out and will from now on be avoiding BaBas restaurant.

I strongly urge anyone to avoid BaBas and possibly visit Shanaz in Truro instead.

When The Baba first opened we thought we would try a take-away from them restaurant before booking a table at a later date. Sadly, it was a very poor meal.
Despite being ordered well in advance (3 hours) and with a precise time given when we would be back to collect - 9pm - when we arrived we were kept waiting for over half an hour which meant it was nearly 10pm by the time we got home and had our dinner. A bit late for me I'm afraid.
The chapatis were not chapatis at all but were suspiciously like Old El Paso packet tortillas. The rice was ok, as was my vegetable dish, however my husband's Rogan Josh was merely quickly fried cubes of lamb put into an already prepared sauce without any slow cooking to tenderise therefore it was tough and disappointing.
Added to this it was more expensive than other Indian restaurants in the area, so it wasn't even reasonable value. I wanted to speak to the manager on the telephone the next day but was fobbed off.
If I could give it 'nil points' I would. Shan't be going back.

An Indian A La Carte restaurant? Surely not. The Baba restaurant is a bit out of the way in Wherrytown but is the only Indian Restaurant in West Cornwall that serves something approaching Indian food. In my extensive scoffing experience the rest of Penzance's curry houses serve up the usual oil soaked nonsense - the only competition is Curry Corner where you can actually specify exactly what you want and how you want it. In all the other Indian restaurants I've been in down here if you ask for a Lassi or Gulab Jamun they look at you as though you are mad - at the Baba Restaurant they not only know what you are talking about they have it on the menu. The Chef's Specials are really interesting and a cut above the usual fare. Talking to the manager and a Goan waiter, it is clear they would like to go further if only they could be sure of not alienating the Balti brigade who lack any sense of culinary adventure. Go and support them - encourage them to go further and make this the first real Indian restaurant in Cornwall.

The quickest way to summarise the Baba is to say you pay for what you get - i.e. it's more expensive than all the other Indian restaurants but the food is far superior, as is the super friendly service.

I had a prawn madras, which was as good as any I've had. However, it wasn't my meal that impressed me as most places can knock out a decent hot prawn curry. It was what other people were eating particularly the 'thali' (I think that's what it was called) which was a variety of main courses all of which tasted great and came in a more than generous serving.

At the end of the day this is a proper restaurant so don't be suprised to pay the same prices you would in any of the other upmarket restaurants in the area. That said you get a level of presentation and service that you'll find hard to beat.
