Possibly Hugh Town's grandest building, the Post Office on Hugh Street.

As you can almost see from the plaque the post office was built in 1897, apparently to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.

The unusual Alpine style architecture has been attributed to Thomas Algernon Dorrien-Smith, Lord Proprietor of the islands but not a professional architect. During his time on the islands he lived in Tresco Abbey and the Dorrien-Smith family still do.
