Camelot Castle Hotel - Tintagel
review by: steve
05th April 2007

hmmm well reading this after staying the night it does seem as others have said you love it or hate it. i loved it.

To me there really seems some reviewers here who need to 'get over themselves' and then get to a sterile travel lodge.

check out how many reviewers with negative reviews have give the location a low score ' sour grapes' me thinks, this has to be one of the best locations in the country! if not the world.

It is quirky, i paid £120 for a room on the third floor it had a new bathroom toilet which was in keeping with the price, new carpets and a fabulous four poster bed. maybe the renovation has taken place between reviews or i got lucky.
What i dont understand about the negative reviews is why dont you check the rooms out before booking, obviously if you book over the net this is impossible but to turn up take a room and then winge about it later to me is ridiculous, like buying a car without a test drive.

As far as the owners go its very rare in a place like this to feel you are wellcome(and indeed be welcommed by the owners) for me this just made me feel more at home, they are very sincere pleasant people who genuinely wanted you to relax and feel wellcome, what a crime!!!

Some previuos reviewers mentioned shabbyness, it is a big building that must take a lot of work to maintain and renovate, it is clear that yes there are a few shoddy carpets but they are moving in the right direction, and i felt it only added to the ambiance, the dining room and lounge are immaculate.

Any way just wanted to redress the balance a bit, if you like the sterlity of travel lodge stay with travel lodge, if you want something a bit more individual check it out, ask to see the rooms wander around meet the owners then decide if you want to stay.....

Camelot Castle - don't bother!
review by: anonymous
31st March 2007

A shabby hotel hiding in a building like a Victorian prison. On first impressions quirky and faded grandeur. On deeper inspection unlooked-after, mismatched interiors providing a confused backdrop to an over-abundance of paintings, and quick solution bathroom additions to odd-shaped bedrooms. The patron supplies an abundance of spiritual material where tourist information would be more useful. His insistence that visitors should 'let themselves go, you know you deserve it' created in me - a normally happy and positive person - the opposite effect, fear and depression.

Camelot claims to serve the best coffee in Cornwall. It is in fact run-of-the mill instant with the bitter after taste only available in the cafés that care least. Served as part of a thrown-together breakfast by a matron that would really rather you hadn't got up, the overall impression is Fawlty Towers without the laughter.

Out of the three sea-view rooms that were available when I stayed, the sea was only viewed around corners, or over the grey stone parapets of the third floor. In the words of the receptionist showing me around 'the third floor is not very good in this hotel.' Given the option I stayed with my car park view realising very quickly that the best way of dealing with the situation was to go out as early as possible and stay out as long as possible.

Romantics also beware of the curious website and its claims to 'private beach'. If it does in fact exist none of the staff were able to direct me to it.

I cannot help but feel that Tintagel would be far better off without this monstrosity and am troubled by the fact that I contributed any of my hard earned money towards keeping it in business.

Also, since my stay I have been hounded by emails from the owner, an ambitious wanna-be arts patron with religous views.

This was by far the creepiest experience I have ever encountered. The hotel is extremely tacky and cheap with disasterous works of art, done by the owner who claims he is the greatest artist alive ( this is backed up by unconvincingly false newspaper articles created by himself and littered around the hotel in peculiar places).
On entering the dining room for my very average dinner, I was greeted by the other owner who latched onto me in the most uncomfortable way. He then proceeded by saying I had the most amazing aura and he felt that after dinner I should accompany him to a room where he keeps a machine called the Light Box!
I felt totally uncomfortable and on edge during my breef stay at this over priced and badly kept, creepy hotel. In the morning I didnt dare stay for breakfast.
It is a real shame that for a such a historic site as Tintagel, this hotel has not been closed down yet.
I couldnt agree more with all of the reviews above, I just wish I had read them before booking at Camelot Castle Hotel.

60TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
review by: ROB HAWKEN
31st March 2007

My partner and I attended Camelot Castle with her family to celebrate her mothers 60th birthday, being Cornish and living locally we have come to expect value for money, and we certainly recieved that, the staff were exemplary and one of the owners Mr John Mappin was a gentleman and came to chat with us in the restaurant, we did not meet Mr Ted Stourton but i did view much of his art which personally i was not impressed with, i would lot rather have seen pictures of an Arthurian nature which would have been more suited to the surroundings.
The food was superb and could not be criticised in any way and at a price that was very pleasing.
A great unhurried afternoon was had by all, we shall return.

31st March 2007

Our experience of this hotel is one we would rather forget. The bedroom was shabby, the carpet threadbare and the bedcovers stained. The poor excuse for a shower was a cubicle plonked in the middle of the bedroom and the toilet was barely a broom cupboard.

We realised it was time to make our excuses and leave when during breakfast a large black Labrador attempted to make friends with guests. A waitress quickly ushered the dog out………if only directly into the kitchen! Other guests were arriving for their breakfast only to be snapped at by staff and ordered to “wait in the lounge!”. It was as much as my husband and I could do to stifle our giggles. I kept expecting Basil Fawlty to appear at any minute.

We will always remember Camelot for being the worst hotel we have ever stayed in.

31st March 2007

My husband saw the website when we were planning our trip to England when my daughter was in school in Norwich. It looked fantastic and the rates were lower than the excellent B&B we stayed in in Amesbury. When we first arrived, we were greeted by co-owner John Mappin. He was all decked out in a blue velvet frock coat, a.k.a. Byron. He was interested in me when I said I owned a travel magazine and said, "Oh we like Americans." For some reason, I replied, "You like our money," and he went away in a huff. Our room had a wonderful view overlooking the ocean and headlands and a peculiar maze cut out of the lawn below. My husband went down to the bar for a beer while my daughter and I unpacked. While he was enjoying his brew, the Eastern European (Russian?) bartender put on a CD about Scientology. In the meantime, my daughter (who is also a writer)and I had a good time disparaging the doggerel poetry we found on our pillows. We viewed Ted's paintings on our way to dinner. The "World's Greatest Living Artist" makes powerful statements by putting irridescent butterfly stickers in the corners of his paintings, which are mostly fat brush strokes of color. There were Scientology books on in the lobby book rack, and we began to get the feeling that we had landed in a Scientology recruiting station. The gourmet dinner was excellent, and exceeding expensive (not included in the stay). We noticed John Mappin entertaining a table full of suckers and wondered if they were being converted. We were not invited to see the "Light Box" (thank God!). After a few overpriced drinks in the bar, we went to our room. They had installed a bathroom with a plastic shell around it--kind of a glorified port-a-potty. Whenever the door was closed, the fan would come on with a "whump, whuump, whump"--not exactly what you want to hear in the middle of the night. About midnight, strange music began emanating from the lower regions of the hotel. We didn't get much sleep. Our full English breakfast was a disaster. The eggs came sunnyside up and were barely cooked. If I'd had a little more to drink the night before, I might've puked. The sausages were inedible. The gourmet cook must've quit in the middle of the night. This was once a luxury hotel. Mappin and Stoughton (whatver his name is) have made it a joke.

31st March 2007

I have just returned with my wife from three days at Camelot 'Castle' and what a fool I feel. Why didn't I read these reviews before I booked, thus saving me from such a terrible rip off. I can only presume that the oh so positive reviewers are either remedials, or more likely, friends and followers of the ludicrous owners. Having said this, there were some very strange people around the place.
I will say that the staff we met were friendly, if a little vacant-language being the barrier for cheap labourers from Poland. The food was acceptable, but over priced, and from a menu riddled with spelling mistakes and poor grammar.
Unlike other reviewers, I am not able to see the funny 'Fawlty Towers' side of this hotel yet, as the pain of a seven hundred pound bill is still a little raw. I can heartly concur with others in that this is the shabbiest and most disappointing hotel I've stayed in. The owners seem very confused in what they want their 'castle' to be. Decoratively speaking it's a train smash of fake medieval, 60's retro, and a vomit-inducing prevalance of Mr Stourton's offerings. We did enjoy all the absurd pictures of John Mappin with the 'stars', although one imagines that none of them will be staying at Camelot anytime soon. We met Mr Mappin at dinner when he was floating around meeting and greeting, and in the short time it took for me to hint heavily that we wanted to be left alone, he managed to tell me what good friends he was with my M.P, and a government Minister. He's the sort of bore you'd meet at a party, and whatever you've done and whoever you'd met, he'd have been there first.
We managed to avoid the charms of Ted's light box, suspecting it to be a forum for him to peddle his wares, although couldn't miss the carefully placed publications proclaiming him to be Britain's best loved artist. You really couldn't make it up.
The hideous bar would be more at home in a B+B in the rougher end of Blackpool's Golden Mile, and we especially loved the 'fresh' cakes that were left out for us to purchase next to filled up ashtrays. Every time you wanted a drink you had to go in search of a member of staff, and would often be served by the chap at the front desk. The music was indescribably awful, and put one in mind of a Hammer house horror, which come to think of it is somehow fitting.
I really could go on and on, but to conclude, I think this establishment is an embarrassment to the Cornwall Tourist Board, and I feel deeply disappointed with myself for not having done more homework prior to booking.

31st March 2007

9th to 11th February 2007 Room 118.
My family occupied a very large room with fabulous sea views. We were at all times very comfortable and warm.
Yes the room was not up to the standard of the major luxury hotel groups but neither was the cost.
The lounge, reception, bar and restaurant areas had all been recently refurbished to a very good standard. Open log fires, very comfortable sofas and wonderful views from the windows made our stay most enjoyable.
The restaurant offered extremley good value for money. We had three very good breakfasts and two excellent dinners. The staff at all times were very attentive, polite and all seemed very professionally trained. Henrick, Frenzy and Christopher we remember by name, the others were also excellent too.
Camelot Castle being privately owned by John and Irina Mappin and Ted Stourton proved to be of huge interest to us. We felt very special being able to meet these people, Ted a prolific artist producing vast canvasses of vivid colour in an impressionist style, remember art is of personal choice, John working in media, but embarking on musical career using Tintagel as inspiration, we liked very much the CD.
The main benefit of this hotel for us proved to be
that we all felt instantly relaxed on arrival and during our three day stay, a thereputic experience that recharged our batteries both physically and mentally.
Sadly we were not able to experience "the light box" we ran out of time, but we will definatley next time insist on it.
Finally let me say to all the previous review writers who have poked fun at Camelot Castle or indeed insulted it. Please open your mind to this experience, enjoy the wonderfully positive creative "vibe" that runs through the whole place and remember that if you expect the Waldorf or the Ritz then go there, not Camelot.
Our most sincere thanks go out to all the staff and owners at Camelot Castle.
Kind regards John Pitt and family

My wife and I have just spent a weekend and I have to say I can disagree with several of the previous reviews. The staff were most courteous and the food excellent. Our room which was a deluxe room was okay although the furnishings could have been better and we had superb en suite facilities, from prevoius reviews we obviously struck lucky!
Be prepared that you may well be met by John Mappin and Ted Stourton with their scientologist views and who may well seem weird to most people,Ted is certainly a strange character.Don't expect the Ritz if you choose to stay and you may feel you wish to escape from the place, if you do, do so before midnight otherwise you will most likely be locked in!.
Would we recommend the hotel? If you wish to stay in a place that is pretentious this is the place for you.It is overpriced and shabby in places although there is a refurbishment programme underway but judging the progress so far this could take years!.Suggest you just visit for lunch and take a look yourself.

one cold dark winter, my husband and i decided to give our two young children a halloween to remember after many long hrs of browsing the internet we came up with a castle that looked the part and was within our budget so we couldnt believe our luck and off we set on our 18 hr (in total) journey from belfast to rosslare from there we boarded the ferry to fishguard and proceeded on our journey to Tintagel ,in what was an already nail biting experience down narrow winding lanes with a gail force wind behind us. At around 10.30pm we arrived at our castle? which was perched on a cliff and had the wind and our two children howling in the background . once through the strange doors you could not have wrote the script for what was about to take place over the next 5 nights.I think it has to have been the most bizzare 6 days holiday my family and i have ever experienced and you no what ( yes it was a lidls version of a castle )but money could not buy the absolutely brilliant experiences that we had whislt there ,As a psychiatric nurse i was no stranger to barking mad people and Mr Ted stourton was no exception , but a nicer more friendly gentleman i never met and he certainly gave my children some memories they will never forget. whilst dogs are unhygenic in a hotel setting, we adored having them around us and my children would even have liked to have taken them to their beds. Now onto the bedroom with the rattling windows , the weird decor and the plastic (early learning centre) bathroom in the middle of the wall it was, i agree not befitting of a grand castle? but then neither were the many varied wonderful pieces of art work scattered throughout the bedrooms the halls and landings. This however did not stop one admiring Teds diversity in painting and giving you something to either critisise or commend (Better than an old picture of ones fossilised ancestors that you never knew anyway). The multicultural lack of English speaking staff in a remote part of Devon was noticable and it would have been nice to have spoken with local people to learn of their culure and way of life but however as we are now living in a time of diversity and opportunity i have no objection or complaints against those that did service us whilst there . As for the food i also have no complaints , but then my expectations of life are reasonably moderate and i think society today has become to commanding and intolerent of what most would be grateful for. The interior design of the bar is the most bizzare i have ever encountered (dont know what was going on with the replica black iron dungeon theme on the walls) As for the price of drink i dont remember it being to extortionate. We all certainly felt very welcome and even lit the fire one night for ourselves and the children. As suggested in other reveiws we are not friends of the owners but i would have no hesitation in including Mr Stourton on our list of people to stay in contact with. On leaving we even squashed a 5ft by 4ft wonderful original painting , plus the one we were given free of charge into our seven seater car and compromised our two childrens comfort on their 18hr journey back to Belfast .Over all we went to buy memories for our children in later life and we got an abundance of them and even though some of them were very bizzare and eerie (specially the basement one) it was halloween and the castle resting on the cliffs of tinagel with the wind howling daily left us with an experience any film producer would be inspired by .

How best to describe King Arthur's Castle Hotel or Camelot as it is also known. It's almost easier to describe what it is not. It is not a corporate; everything's the same, bland and predictable hotel. It is best described as quirky. I would imagine that patrons would either love or hate it. I cannot imagine a middle path of acceptability. If you are happy to "go with the flow", accept that this is an old building with limited staff that requires you to hunt down a bartender when you want a drink and that at times the lights seem to dim for no explainable reason. If you don't like MDF matching furniture, but prefer a sense of having just stepped onto the set from a fifties movie. If you want to sit in the dining room overlooking King Arthur's Castle and the sea whilst eating good food. If you want to sit on the large sofas, have coffee over a game of chess in front of an open fire. If you want to wake up to an amazing sea view go for it. If you expect bland predictability stay away

Our recent stay at Camelot was one of the most amazing events in my life. I know this may sound a slight exaggeration but the tranquillity, atmosphere and the friendliness of the staff made our stay one that will truly remain one of our lifetime memories. If I had to sum up the whole experience in one word it would be 'inspirational'.

I've now read some of the other reviews here and like I said you will either love or loathe Camelot.

Having just stayed the last three days there i can honestly say i have never been anywhere as relaxing and welcoming as camelot castle hotel.
We arrived on friday. The room inwhich we were in had the most amazing view of the sea and the ruins. The room its self was well decorated and had some of the most beutiful furniture i have seen inc a hand carved blanket box and a carved four poster bed.
The hotel its self is brilliant and is not spolit by modern decoration. There radiaters are victorian and at no time were we cold.
In the evenings we would relax in frount of there many real coal fires and play scrabble or cards whilst we enjoyed a drink.
The staff at camelot castle could not do anough for you and at all times were polite and very helpfull. The food here was lovely and the waiter and waitress what serverd us was fantastic and really made us feel special.
camelot castle is the most amazing place with excelent view,
we felt so at home there and would highly reccomend it to anyone with the need to get away. The place is so peacefull and it was lovely to sleep at night and hear the waves crashing against the rocks.
Having read some of the previous preview and the problems they had i can honestly say we never experienced any prehaps they would have been happier in a hotel in a town center.away from the peace and tranquilaty what the hotel and its surrounds offer.
The other guests which we talked to were more than happy with there stay.
we truly loved it and hope to return as soon as possible.
we have been to cormall loads of times and this by far is the best hotel we have stayed in.

wonderful stay at camelot castle! the public rooms are amazing - sumptuous but incredibly comfortable. Staff friendly, and couldn't have done more for you. We stayed a night, and loved it so much we came back two nights later - first bedroom was large, but tired.... second room was one of the upgraded rooms, and was totally luxurious! Don't travel anywhere near tintagel without visiting camelot castle, - and if you intend to stay overnight - give this place a go! It's not as expensive as it looks.....

31st March 2007

March 2007:

While searching the north Cornish coast three weeks ago for ancient Neolithic ruins, circle stones, monk huts, and of course in pursuit of all things King Arthur, I happened to stumble across the Camelot Castle Hotel in Tintagel.

Off-season travel in the UK can be a hit or miss excursion, and if you are fortunate enough to find a place that is truly open for service, the service may be less than adequate. Camelot Castle Hotel proved to be filled with wonderfully subtle and unexpected surprises in service, guest attention, food, history, and avant-garde impressionist art, all presented with an underlying philanthropic focus for artists of any genre. Open minded- travellers will find Camelot simply charming, an eclectic mix of history and fable, shabby-chic, a restful environment with plush sofas and open log fires. For the adventurous guest, an opportunity to explore expression through the world of music and art are there for the taking, surrounded by local history and ancient ruins.

The Camelot Castle Hotel staff were cheerful, enthusiastic and courteous, but not overly so. The rooms are sundry, each with their own personality and quirky tidbits, and some have sweeping views of the ocean. The dining room is lovely on a sunny morning, and has an understated elegantly casual feeling in the evening with plenty of space between tables overseen by massive works of Ted’s art on the walls. Our servers, many of whom were new to the UK, were proper, polite and eager to please, and the food was delicious. From check-in (without a booking) to departure, the hotel staff performed at their best. Ted, one of the resident owners, made it a point to greet me once checked in, a truly charming and unusual touch of style. What an enjoyable surprise. Camelot Castle Hotel could never be classified as standard British hotel fare, thank goodness! Thank you for the unexpected surprise. I will visit again. –jcb-

Overall this was the most disappointing hotel experience I have ever had. It was completely self absorbed with Ted Stourton's 'art'. The room was unclean, dark and flooded. The furniture was mis-matched 50's decor which was falling apart. We had to get a new room which wasn't really any better. The toilet facilities are as bad as people are claiming, it was like a portaloo bolted into the room, hardly en suite. The milk which accompanied the coffee set was sour and gone off. I think it is a case of when a couple of things are wrong you can accept it but apart from the beautiful area I can't think of one thing to say about this place that I liked! Certainly not worth the cost.
I just wanted a clean and comfortable room in a lovely hotel for a birthday present for my girl friend. Obviously not to be. If you plan on staying here, please check it out very carefully first and make sure this is what you are really looking for, I feel very let down by the whole weekend and so does my girl friend.

This has to rate as the worst, most disappointing hotel I have ever had the misfortune to experience. How I wish I'd read these reviews before I stayed the night here. Anything positive on these reviews is surely made up by the owners because this place is dangerous, dirty and a huge rip off. Don't be sucked in.
The very worst kind of hotel that is shabby, shoddy and believes it is really arty/quirky. This place even makes up its own gushing letters of praise that are displayed on the walls.

£150 for a 4 poster bed (ONE NIGHT) - with threadbare carpets, a toilet in a freaky caravanesque plastic pod, wooden light switches, dangerous wiring, dirty room, creepy poetry left on the pillow.
This is perhaps only matched by the farce that is the lounge and bar, adorned with bizarre paintings and photographs of stars who are claimed to be "Friends of Camelot" - some of their names are even mispelt.
Food menus are barely English, howling grammatical errors, the staff are Polish, and best of luck if you want to buy a drink at the bar.
I would like to say the view more than made up for this horrific hotel - but they can't even be bothered to clean the windows, so good luck trying to actually see it.
Thoroughly horrific, has to be seen to be believed - but you would never ever want to see this.

Camelot Castle Hotel - Tintagel
review by: Ed Williams
31st March 2007

I found myself staying at Camelot over a sunny but breezy weekend in March, having been booked in by a friend who, simply put, likes to do things "differently". Camelot is certainly different. The hotel was being used as a central base for a walking weekend around Cornwall's amazing coastline, so following lengthy internet searches, it was by sheer coincidence that our group landed itself in what is without doubt the single most bizarre hotel/B&B experience of our lives.

But! That isn't to say a bad thing.

From the off, all appeared well - we arrived in the late of evening and the place was lit up like a christmas tree, glowing from it's prominent position on the edge of the cliffs overlooking Tintagel island, as we drew up on the main approach road. The staff brought us into a (very, very warm) reception area that was covered floor to ceiling in paintings, celebrity snaps (all framed!) and “artwork” of every conceivable genre, looking like all of it had been thrown, or spewed, onto the walls amidst a great hissy-fit, such was the lack of order. It was like walking into a movie scene from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, such was the dizzying flurry of colours and shapes. All this said, it was not the least bit offensive, but you immediately knew that Camelot was going to be anything if ordinary.

And then to the rooms, of which I only saw 2, which were just pleasantly "adequate". My wife and I were pleased with the 4-poster bed but were left in laughing-fits over the mishap furniture and port-a-loo-cum-shower contraption, that seemed totally at odds with itself and its surroundings, in the corner of the room. But it all somehow fitted into the grand, if bizarre, scheme of things here. Everything in the room seemed to work ok, from the lights to the kettle and even the TV which, by my guess, was probably among one of the first ever production models. It had proper push-buttons and a screen that warmed-up and everything. Ok, so there was dirt on the windows, but who cares!? It's a bloody big building and frankly, being so close to the sea, windows will become salt-covered within hours of a wash. It didn't detract from the fact that we had the most amazing view over the Tintagel Island and the Antlantic beyond and anyone claiming otherwise is being a whiney-arsed pedant. All in all, it made us smile, so it couldn’t be bad.

Further examination of the hotel and some of it’s facilities (the grand dining room, the comfortable lounge/throughfare type thing and endless celebrity-clad corridors) confirmed early suspicions that this whole place is a big spin to sell Ted’s art and John’s Scientology interest.

The evening meal, served in a rather pleasantly decorated dining room, was perfectly satisfactory, if served a little later than hoped - but we had walked 21 miles that day and would probably have eaten just about anything put in front of us. The staff, as ever, were extremely polite and ensured we received good service throughout, despite (in my opinion) being under-manned.

The Light-Box, much anticipated, was just exactly that. A box with a light on it. And a dimmer switch. But, probably not even by design, it actually made some of the otherwise ghastly art look quite acceptable. For the briefest of moments I even found myself wondering how a piece of Ted’s work might look on a wall at home, when, to my surprise, I was given a piece by Ted himself. A piece of art that is. For asking “probing” questions. As with all the other art in the building, and probably everything Ted ever put to canvas, it’s central theme was “friendship”. I am sure I will find a space for it at home…

Here's the thing - you need to be open minded with Camelot. What it most certainly isn't is plush, grand, discreet and highly polished. But, it is welcoming, friendly, warm (very warm) and filled to bursting with a strange and baffling mix of art, puzzles, trivia, self-proclamation of arty greatness, language-deficient (Manuel-esque) staff (all very polite however) and a unnerving but intriguing sense of calm.

I have been amazed with the sentiment in some of the reviews on this site. It's remarkable that people expect so much for paying so little - our rooms cost us in the region £40-£50 pppn, which included a decent enough breakfast. I noticed that an American visitor had even gone so far as to write that he/she was surprised that dinner wasn’t included! The fact of the matter is, as with anything in life, you pay for what you get. Most "ratings" for hotel/B&B's are based on Facilities, Location and Value. At Camelot, you can be forgiven for giving less than good ratings on all counts, but you have to put it into context of how much you are paying and what else you are getting in return. With Camelot you get quite a lot more and for anyone wanting to experience something different, if a little whacky, I highly recommend giving this place a go.

In conclusion, I’d hardly say that the stay was quite the life-changing nor inspirational experience that Ted and John, by their own frank admissions, hope it will prove to be for all those coming through the revolving doors, but it wasn’t until very near the end of our stay that we realised, as a group, we had spent most of the entire weekend talking and debating the place, obsessing over and trying to make any sense of what we had each experienced.

For the record: none of us are scientologists, artists or whackos. Although one of our group does sell compost….

We found this hotel by accident and they managed to find a room for us after first of all saying they were fully booked. We loved it. OK the bedroom was in a time warp with a shower and toilet tardis! But the staff were excellent, we had a delightful evening meal and equally good English Breakfast. Our visit to the 'lightbox' was spontanious and an amazing experience we will not forget.

Camelot Castle Hotel - Tintagel

31st March 2007

Reading these reviews certainly invoked a strong reaction from both my husband and myself. We have stayed at many "Castle" hotels in Europe and quite a few Bed & Breakfasts as well. Camelot Castle is a delightful blend of the two, with a subliminal mist of Arthurian legend emanating from everything and everyone inside this very unique and inspiring accommodation. If you are looking for staid or pomp, you will not find it here. The staff and the owners seem to strive to give you a true Camelot experience. (Camelot, by it's very name, signifies all that is pure, dreams that can be, souls that touch and change the course of our own reality). If you understand this and are looking to breathe in that reality, you will enjoy this hotel. The rooms vary in their ambience. We were fortunate, and by going during the off season, were given keys upon arrival and our choice of four very different, yet lovely rooms. Third floor is best if elaborate bathrooms are important to you. On this floor, we also had access to the romantic crenolated rooftop eaves with views overlooking Tintagel, Merlins Cave, and the rugged Celtic Sea. Many of the rooms on the third floor have been recently renovated. We had a wonderfully decadent authentic period intricately carved four poster bed, in delightful symphany with the other perks above. We were sad to leave.

Level 1 & 2 have the VIEWS TO DIE FOR!!! Varying from enclosed to open balconies with the most breathtaking and tranquil views one could dream of. If you need a romantic and quiet time of introspection to rejuvenate your creative and/or romantic endeavors, these rooms are everything you could hope for (with the proper key). These levels did have very rudimentary bathrooms, but great windows with sweeping views. I understand they are working their way to renovate these rooms as I write. (Call and enquire as to specifics.)

The staff seemed a pleasant blend of discreet elegant service, yet when we needed extra attention (such as the included breakfast brought round to our room in the morning) they would do so with friendly attentive ease. From our front desk clerk, to our waitress, to our room service man/who did double as bartender (but hey this is a Bed and Breakfast Castle hotel), their goal was to make our stay perfect. The food was absolutely fantastic and in line with the pricing at other hotels at remote locales. The cleanliness was incomparable and everything was in order, fireplace blazing at night, thoughtful lighting and lovely floral arrangements prepared by the resident artist himself, daily.

Oh, yes, we saw the much discussed light box gallery, and Mr. Stourton's artwork. As fellow renowned artists who had never before met him; we find him quite brilliant. It was intriguing and thought provoking. The art box was designed exclusively for visual pleasure, inspiration, possibilities of one's journey through life and great camaraderie within everyone's grasp on this earth. Camelot Castle Hotel is definitely a place for the creative and spiritually inclined!

LOVE THIS PLACE.
MISS IT ALREADY!
PLAN TO RETURN!

Camelot Castle Hotel - Tintagel

It's wonderfully entertaining to read such extreme reactions to this hotel. Hot and cold and nothing in between. It depends, of course, on what you want and expect. If it's the bland predictability, sterility and functionality of the species "Holiday Inn" you should steer well clear of Camelot. From Mssrs Stourton and Mappin and their staff you get something very, very different.
My initial acqaintance with the hotel via its eccentric website had prepared me to expect considerable deviations from early 21st century norms and thankfully that's what we got. Some mystery. lots of unanswered questions, curiosity about Mr Stourton's status in the world of art and Mr Mappin's in the film business, strangely equipped bedrooms with their Tardis-like bathroom units and utterly superfluous TVs, a splendidly renovated dining room, excellent food, open fires, lights that oddly faded at regular intervals (possibly whenever the lift was in use), a well functioning bar, no prohibitions, the ubiquitous hints of the cultish (of whatever hue),the "light box" and a uniquely awe-inspiring location.
I have given both "facilities" (whatever that is meant to mean at Camelot) and "value" 4 points and "location" 5. The reasoning is simple: First of all we had a great time and secondly, humans, in the shape of Mssrs Stourton and Mappin, can be expected to strive for perfection. Nature already has it, at least in Tintagel.

This is the worst hotel i have ever been to and it should be closed down and i am going to enquire why it hasnt been. i cannot believe it can have any kind of fire certificate and i saw no signs of fire instructions in my room or any other area. the front door was an old spinning one with no other type of exit and i did not see a second set of stairs for escape.
The bedroom we were given the key to was horrendous. my husband booked a four poster room. the bed covered the main light and we could not see. the switches were original and he wiring looked original too. the heating was vicorian with large pipes around the floor. the fuzzy telly was an old thing a make i have not heard of since the 60's. the room had a caravan type toilet and shower pod in the corner which i would not enter as it wobbled when you opened the door. the sea view was obscured by the very dirty window two windows were broken. there was a mish mash of furniture which looked like it had been thrown out by an owner as it had no more life left in it. the corridors had one dim light in each section - this alone should fail any health and safty check.
We did not stop in the after carring our bags up to the room by ourselves (no one offered to take them for us).
The threadbare carpets and weird paintings (which for some reason had things like shoes stuck on them) on the way up. freaked me out but the shoddy weird room sent us running. unfortunately we are having promblems getting the weird experience out of our heads. the cost of this was £160 per night which when we got back to reception we were advised we could leave if we liked but as it was our money. this ment our card would still be debited as we had to give details when the booking was made over the telephone.
None of this should be allowed please someone help get this place closed down.
We booked into somewhere excellent in boscastle unfortunatley we couldn't bring ourselves to go to tintagel again as this experience completely put us off the place which is a shame as we were looking forward to going to the castle and cave. neither of us could even drive through tintagel again in case we caught sight of this hotel and re lived the experience. i did not want to give this hotel a mark at all but unfortunately 0 wasnt on the list. i think any good reviews on this hotel are made up by the owners as no one could like this place. reading other reviews i am glad i left and did not experience the meals. oh i forgot to mention the smell like the chimney needed cleaning as a fire was lit and the smoke was coming into the main rooms. another fire risk! this place is an accident wating to happen.

After my brief stay here I couldn't decide whether it was a terrifying or hilarious episode-the windows in my tuurret room flew open in the middle of the stormy night and I almost broke both legs leaping across the bed to turn on the light- no light cord above the bed. I woke in the morning intent on finding alternative accommodation but the doors were locked and I was unable to escape until someone- an extra from Shaun of the dead, I think ambled down the stairs to let me out.
The views were undeniably great but one of the owners freaked me out totally by telling me that he had been present at the Sermon on the Mount in a past life and then gave a lecture on mental health and drug detox. Scary stuff. The food was okay- the staff friendly though not many of them were English speaking. My room was grubby and dark with a view only of turrets and the behinds of lingering sea gulls.
If you have a sense of the bizarre you might want to try this but I wouldn't come on my own again- propped half the furniture up against the door at night I was so terrified. The paintings on the wall are enogh to give you nightmares. On the whole I felt as if I had inadvertently strayed into some kind of reality tv show- One flew over the Cuckoos nest crossed with Fawlty Towers.

We think the hotel is absolutely magical. We have spent many a night in hotels all over the country, but this stay was absolutely out of this world. Where else do you get to talk to the owner? Where else can you get superb views? The food was absolutely the best we've ever had. For us, it was truly mind-blowing. We will DEFINITELY be back - sorry Ted!

Our stay was the most magical experience ever ! This hotel is a must if you wish to be inspired and uplifted. The staff were very helpful and welcoming and the restaurant was a warm and charming place serving great food and offers excellent vegeterian food to even satisfy my 'fussy' partner !. My daughter of 4 yrs came with us and enjoyed her stay as a madam princess and did not want to leave. Although there is no child menu offered, the restaurant staff went out of their way to provide for her.
Our room was spacious, clean, and so full of character with stunning views.
I would invite anyone who stays to walk the fantastic ripples of peace and view the light box that opens your heart to the world of creativity and imagination.
This is the best experience I have had and there should be more hotels of this calibre !.
I congratulate the owners Ted Stourton and John Mappin in sharing their art and creativity, perhaps the people who have written such negative comments might have enjoyed it if they opened their minds into what Camelot is all about apart from the splendid decour and gold taps of hotels they would rather be staying in and at a much higher price!.
Camelot hotel offers everything you need for a relaxing, inspirational break with character and difference. It could so be easily turned into a Super rich 'Hilton like' hotel, but thanks to Ted and John they kept it accessible to all and that is to be commended.
I would recomend Camelot Castle hotel to anyone.
Thanks to Ted, John and all their staff !!!.

A hotel in a lovely position overlooking the coast. Large communal rooms with plenty of fresh flowers though carpets a little shabby. Food generally very good though no fresh fruit available at breakfast. Room tiny and basic, needs overhaul, en suite facilities very small and plastic, feels like in a caravan or on a boat or train. Paintings rather over powering and poetry a little strange but the overall experience was ok but overpriced.

We stayed at Camelot for our Honeymooon last year, and whilst I agree to some extent about Ted's over inflated ego it certainly made our honeymoon one to remember!
We found the staff nothing but helpful and courteous and whilst we did visit the 'lightbox' we were not taken in by Ted and managed to come away minus any of his 'artwork'.

(The fact that I am a flautist put paid to any intention of his to play the guitar, and having been presented with one of his CD's I am truly grateful for that!)

The food was a little basic but served and presented nicely as was the breakfast the following morning.
Regarding the emails, my husband has received several emails from Ted with truly awful poetry in but we read, laugh and bin it!

The bathroon/ensuite was the most bizarre thing I have ever seen but was clean and worked!

Our whole experience was one that we thoroughly enjoyed and indeed we are going back there this weekend for our first wedding anniversary!

My advice is to visit Camelot to see for yourself this unusual, one off, quirky hotel and the wondorous views that are there.

We stayed one night in a double room with a view of the real castle.

The good bits:
The main hall is impressive, in a Victorian Gothic way.
The view of Tintagel Castle is superb.

For the rest - we kept hoping it was some sort of bizarre post-post-modernist send-up of the worst excesses of New-Agery. The art isn't just bad, it's jaw-droppingly cutesy-mystical bad. The poetry they leave on your pillow isn't just bad it's barely literate. Then we met the owner, and realised that he believed in everything he was selling.

My partner and I left in a hurry, partly to avoid breaking down in hysterical giggles in front of the staff, and partly to find an edible breakfast.

The experience at this hotel was very forgettable. The bedrooms where we stayed (2nd floor) were very poor quality, shoddy and tacky. We could only stomach one night, as the beds were so uncomfortable - no hope for any relaxation or sleep.

The food was okay, but not noteworthy, though they did provide excellent coffee. The quality of staff and service were sub-standard.

I think visitors could be seduced by the quality of their web site but the hotel is poor and the Cornish Tourist Board should not promote this hotel.

Some apparently do not have the sense of adventure that is required for non motel accomodation.
Ted Stourton's art work within the building is stunning and although he is definetely one of a kind (compliment)he is generous and I would venture highly conscientious about his and others art experiences.Good on you and by the way the food was great!

I am surprised at the number of negative comments about this hotel and the owners, the only negative thing I can say about Mr Stourton is that perhaps he is a bit overwhelming in his attempts to welcome people and that can be a bit of a turn off for some I suppose. I personally did not mind and I was charmed at his guided tour.

I would agree that the hotel appears to be going through a honeymoon period whilst the place is refurbished and the staff are trained. When we dropped in for a drink one lunchtime, the staff there were quite attentive and friendly even though most of them did not have English as their main language - I assumed that many were foreign students working there so took that into account.

Oh yes - the hotel does do a good cup of coffee!

A friend and I walked into the Camelot Castle Hotel out of curiosity because the building is so imposing and were encouraged to look around by the owner, which we found surprising but kind. We explored the place alone, we were astonished at the owner's obvious over-inflated ego displayed as 'paintings' on every wall, were bemused by the abunmdance of plastic flowers everywhere, spooked by the dark corridors and vast emptiness of it all...got to feel really quite spooky and haunted so attempted to leave !

But no, the owner caught up to with us at the front door and, for some unexplainable reason we were unable to say no when the owner led us into the cellars where we were sat on stools and made to listen to him playing the guitar...then onto the lightbox. We felt quite nervous, us two ladies, and wondered, at moments, whether we would get out alive but we did. Looking back on the experience, it was thrilling and scarey - a bit like a ghost ride in an old-fashioned fair.

Stay there overnight ? I'd rather sleep in the back of my car...but what about that coachload of unsuspecting pensioners who turned up to stay as part if a guided coach tour ? I wonder what they thought ?

I am afraid my experience of Camelot Castle was every bit as bizarre and disappointing as other guests have stated.

The room was shabby and tacky - most certainly overpriced which did not een include breakfast. The service was not what you would expect in a hotel charging these prices.

We were treated to the 'lightbox expereience' which only relieved us of cash for a painting we were subtly conned into buying. (again overpriced) how foolish we were.

My husband and I went to Camelot Castle Hotel for our 3rd wedding anniversary, what a disaster! Firstly the dinner took a total of 2 hours, the main was burnt and wasn't very good. Asked for a glass of wine which I did not receive but got charged for, asked twice for a jug of water and finally got it. Breakfast was even worse, considering they charge £10 for it no matter what you have and you have to wait a long time for it, we left after half an hour. There is a cafe up in the town called Kingfisher that is much better value for money and you get decent service and value for money. The staff are not very good at their jobs, I think they are still in training and need to learn English. The room was just as bad, very worn and threadbare with water stains. The ensuite was the size of a normal toilet cubicle but it had a very small shower, basin and toilet in it. Fortunately our days out in Cornwall made up for this very disappointing stay. The only good thing about the hotel was the location and the views of the castle.

I am truly surprised at finding negative reviews of this magical place.

The staff are exceptional and the owner is charming and intriguing. The rooms are spacious with gloriously high ceilings, not to mention the spectacular views of the coast with the ruins of Richard II's castle perched on the highest cliff. If you are looking for modern decors consisting of beige, beige, and more beige colour schemes then Camelot Castle is not for you. Personally I find the warm, atmospheric, and historically rich decor of Camelot Castle far more interesting.

I will never forget my experience at Camelot and plan to return as soon as I can.

My wife and I booked a room in this hotel for 7 nights. On arrival we were informed that we had been upgraded to a family room. The room was dog-eared, large and dreary with three beds and a small bathroom cubicle in the corner. The wallpaper had damp marks and was torn and peeling near the window. We tried not to spoil our holiday by complaining and went down to the bar where I was served with a warm pint of draught lager and a glass of red wine for £8.00. Apparently the warm lager was my fault because I should have asked for a cold one. We deduced that our experiences in the first hour did not bode well for the remainder of our stay and decided to leave. We paid the £52.00 cancellation fee, without much argument, as we wanted to get away from the place as quickly as possible. The good news is that, within 15 minutes, we found a marvellous B&B in Tintagel for considerably less than what the Camelot Castel was charging.

Camelot Castle Hotel - A Joke of a place
review by: richard
04th January 2006

This hotel is a joke.

I have never felt so conned out of a weekend in my life. It is overpriced. The rooms were some of the worst rooms i have ever stayed in, with small plastic cubicle toilets that were more akin to portaloos that anything i have ever seen before.

The food was unbelivably basic and badly cooked served in a school dinner like way by staff who made you feel it was more of a chore than part of their job.

One of the worst experiences were with the owner of the hotel who made you feel that he regarded you as a guest at a private party rather than a customer in his hotel. He was over bearing and reagrded you with distain. After making one of our party cry as she tried to complain, he advised her that she should not feel comfortable staying another night even though we had no choice as he would not refund the cost of the room.

Tintagel would be better off without such a shambles of a hotel run by an egotistical creepy owner who will try and either flog you some paintings or make you listen to his gut wrenching 'mystical' music throughout the hotel.

If you want to have an epxerience that you can tell you freinds then I'd rather chew my fingers off than go back here.

Camelot Castle Hotel - Disappointment guaranteed!
review by: anonymous
04th January 2006

The previous reviews submitted mirror what friends and I recently experienced at the hotel and how we felt.

This is the type of hotel experience you joke about in years to come, but most certainly not at the time. There genuinely is nothing positive to say about the accomodation, service, quality, hospitality or pricing policy. We were simply stunned that so much could be done wrong in such a small space of time!

The hotel's location on the cliffs is great, however do not be fooled into thinking that this will compensate for the experience in the hotel. There is alternative accomodation in Tintagel within walking distance of the cliffs upon which Camelot Castle Hotel stands.

In this day and age, it's mind boggling to see that "Faulty Towers without the laughs" really exists. It's even more mind boggling that health & safety, trading standards or the Cornish Tourism Board have not had this hotel closed down.

Anyone going to this hotel will leave disappointed and frustrated.

We stayed at the camelot following a friends wedding, thankfully we were only staying the one night or I'd of been out at the crack of dawn the following day looking for alternative accomodation. The whole hotel has a very shabby/rundown feel, I agree with the previous comment about the serving staff who view you staying there as an inconvienience they have to endure (and they don't hide their feelings). The bar prices differ dependant on who serves you, they varied by upto 40% in the space of 2 hours!!. The ensuite in our room was a strange pink plastic 'cubicle' which contained the toilet, basin and shower in one, ours actually leaked into the room when I had a shower as the water was so slow to drain out of the shower part. The best way I can discribe the camelot is a cross between Fawlty Towers and Guest House Paradiso with none of the laughter. Beware of the 'light box' exhibition it seems as though this is some kind of hypnosis event, several guests said that they were 'conned' into buying the owners book and CD and they were told that they couldn't change their minds and return them even though they were still sealed.
