Charlestown is situated near St. Austell and during years gone by, was of great importance to the local economy as it’s port was used to import coal and export local China Clay. Since the decline in the China Clay industry, the harbour remains as important as ever and provides a permanent berth for square-riggers.

St Austell itself is the meeting point of old and new Cornwall, of ancient narrow streets and pedestrian precincts with fine shops and restaurants. The bay has numerous sandy beaches and fishing villages. Renowned attractions, such as The Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan are close by.
