Sterling House - Marazion

Sterling House is a seven bedroom Georgian property in the heart of Marazion with outstanding sea views. Its garden is amongst the largest in Marazion and it unusually has parking for four cars, a premium in this picturesque town situated on the very edge

Sterling House is situated in the quiet picture postcard seaside village of Marazion, famous for St Michael’s Mount and within 100 yards of two miles of sandy beaches reaching right around Mounts Bay to Penzance. This impressive large four storey Georgian property with its many period features combined with individual en suite bedrooms and modern kitchen make for a high-end beach holiday, with breathtaking sea views from many bedrooms and the large and extremely attractive garden adding to the experience.
There is ample parking for four cars, which is a premium in Marazion, and award-winning restaurants and galleries within a couple of minutes walk mean that the House is ideally situated to make your holiday as relaxed and convenient as possible.
Sterling House also has an interesting historical connection, in that it is owned by the 4 greats grandson of Thomas Lefroy, widely believed to have been the basis for Mr Darcy in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (the 2007 film Becoming Jane starring James McAvoy and Anne Hathaway records their relationship). Many of his items of furniture and some other personal effects can be seen in the house.
The items that belonged to him are clearly marked and guests are asked to take special care around them! However, families with young children should not be deterred as most are out of reach of tiny hands!
The House itself is 100 yards from the two mile long beach, and faces St Michael’s Mount, the dramatic island castle now run by the National Trust. From the top bedroom the view extends to take in the villages of Mousehole, Newlyn and the town of Penzance across the bay.
The huge top floor bedroom with its en suite bathroom takes the entire top floor. The bed is a 6’ double. On the next floor down there are three bedrooms, all en suite, one a fixed six foot double and the other two both with zip and link beds that can be made into singles, twins or doubles on reques.
On the floor below is a further bedroom, a fixed six foot double with sea views and an en suite bathroom. The laundry room with washing machine and dryer is also on this floor.
On the ground floor the large bright modern-equipped kitchen has seating for up to twelve and opens onto the garden with its three terraces and two lawns. There is also a second fridge freezer in the boiler house outside the back door. The high-ceilinged library with its huge French windows comfortably seats six, and the sitting room comfortably seats seven, and there is a further WC on this floor. Access to North Street and to the beach is through the front door which is off the sitting room.
Marazion itself dates back to Robert, Count of Mortain, who was given lands and use of St Michaels Mount and the right to hold a market on Thursdays. The earliest recorded fairs or markets on the site were in 1070 A.D. There are many places vying for the title of the oldest town in Britain, including Marazion (known as Ictis by the Romans). It is situated on the shore of Mount’s Bay, two miles (3 km) east of Penzance, and twelve miles from Land’s End.
St Michael’s Mount, now open to the public and run by the National Trust, is half-a-mile offshore from Marazion. At low water a causeway links it to the town and at high water passenger boats carry visitors between Marazion and St Michael’s Mount. From Sterling House the walk across to the Mount takes less than ten minutes.
Marazion is a thriving tourist resort with an active community of artists who produce and sell paintings, jewellery and pottery in the town’s numerous art galleries. The town is also home to a burgeoning gastronomic reputation, with three excellent local restaurants within two minutes’ walk of Sterling House. It also has three pubs, a post office, a corner shop selling a wide variety of goods and an excellent pasty shop – open year-round!
At Christmas a large Christmas Tree is erected in the main square and on Christmas Eve the whole village gathers in the square to sing carols. Santa comes on his sleigh and gives presents to all the local children and the pubs serve mulled wine and mince pies. New Year’s Eve is quieter as most revellers head in fancy dress to St Ives, about fifteen minutes drive, where most of the town turns into a giant street party! However the fireworks over Penzance and the famous Christmas lights at Mousehole (ten minutes drive) are clearly visible over the bay from Sterling House.

All in all this large, warm, comfortable house with its perfect position in one of Cornwall’s most beautiful and welcoming towns is a rare treat for any visitor.
